How is the Albacete Fair and when is it celebrated?

The Albacete Fair is the big festival, declared of International Tourist Interest, which is celebrated annually from September 7 to 17 in honor of the Virgen de los Llanos in the Spanish city of Albacete. It takes place mainly in the area of more than 180,000 m² comprised of the Albacete Fairgrounds (Well of Cultural Interest with the category of monument), the Fair Walk, the Ejidos de la Feria and the Albacete Bullring, in the traditional Fair neighborhood of the Albacete capital, in the heart of the city, as well as in various points of the La Mancha city. With one of the best bullfighting fairs in Spain, the Albacete Bullfighting Fair, and hundreds of activities 24 hours a day, the city quadruples its population during the Fair. In 2019 it had 2,500,000 visitors.

How old is the Albacete Fair?

It is one of the oldest fairs in Spain. The first reports of annual fairs in the city of Albacete date back to the first decade of the 1200s. In 1375, when Albacete separated from Chinchilla and became a town, it officially received the right to hold an annual fair. Over the centuries, fairs gained importance, which led the Catholic Monarchs to recognize them. But without a doubt, the moment that historically marked the Albacete Fair and the city was March 6, 1710: in the middle of the war of succession, the first Bourbon, Felipe V, gave the city the privilege of holding an annual free fair with a duration of four days that, over the years, went on to have 10 days as it does today.

When was the Fairgrounds built?

In 1783, the Albacete Fairground was built, popularly known as La Sartén or Los Reddondeles, in its current location. The fair building, with a pan-shaped floor plan, is an example of La Mancha architecture oriented towards commercial activity. The body of the pan is made up of concentric rings that house trading posts.
